Literature

Doreen Bolger Burke, et al., In Pursuit of Beauty: Americans and the Aesthetic Movement, New York, 1986, p. 166 (for the model in the collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art)
Katherine S. Howe, et al., Herter Brothers: Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, New York, 1994, pp. 170-171 (for two variants of the model and a period illustration of the model used in the Red Room of the White House, Washington, D.C.,  ca. 1880)

Condition

Generally good overall condition. Surfaces with rubbing, nicks, dryness and scattered gouges notably to the corners and edges. Looseness to the joins that would benefit from adjustment. One chair with a break at the stretcher with 2 ½ inch associated loss to the wood. The later upholstery has not been fully removed, but from inspection it appears that some of the tops of the chair-rails have been reduced in areas to accommodate the over upholstery. The models are pleasing and attractive and would benefit from a sensitive restoration.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

This refined and elegant chair form was executed in a number of variations by Herter Brothers to suit the specific function of a room or a client's personal taste.  The present lot is one of the high-style versions showing the influence of the English Arts and Crafts movement on the American firm.  Its incised ebonized surface, Chinese-style latticework, inlaid sunflowers, and crest rail configuration harken the work of E.W. Godwin and the tenants of the Aesthetic movement in Britain.
