Catalogue Note
The "Apple Blossom" lamp is believed to have been designed by Clara Driscoll shortly after she designed the "Wisteria" lamp (see lot 70) in 1901. The "Apple Blossom," along with the firm's "Trumpet Creeper" and "Grape" lamps, share the same overall form and bronze armature as the "Wisteria" and were built on the same wooden mold.
This lamp is distinguished by its atypical selection of glass--namely the use of textured and confetti glass--and its rare use of patinated copper foil (rendered over the leaded glass) to sculpt the branches which trail down the exterior of the shade. These attributes impart a tremendous amount of depth and texture to the shade. Of the few known examples of this rare pattern, the branchwork is articulated in leaded glass alone. The present lot is the only "Apple Blossom" shade presently known to feature this exquisite and labor-intensive sculpted branchwork.
