Description

  • width: 7.3cm, 2 7/8 in.
heart-shaped with applied beaded borders, the hinged lid set with a coloured enamel and gilt paillon portrait after a photograph of King Christian IX, ink inventory number 232, in contemporary dark green morocco case with ivory-coloured silk and velvet lining; and a Danish 'Christmas' label dated 1906

Condition

Excellent condition, with only very minor surface scratches. Minor time wear to leather case.

Catalogue Note

'Christmas' labels were issued annually at the holidays and sold for charity. Although they had no franking value, they were often placed alongside the postage stamp on a letter, or were used at the back as a seal. The photograph of King Christian IX which served as a model for this label and the enamel portrait plaques on this and the following lot was taken in 1904 to mark the 40th anniversary of his ascension to the throne.
