An Italian silk damask and appliqué metal thread panel 18th century

the central panel comprised of three joined lengths of cerise damask woven with a repeat pattern of a parallel stems intermittently bound with two bars, enclosing alternating motifs of two variations of a stem with foliate motifs, the outer four-sides forming a border (approx. 27cm. wide), with the same damask design applied with overlayed flat silver-gilt metal-thread and couched golden threads

The central panel is comprised of three joined lengths (each approximately 54.5cm. wide). The outer four sides are approx. 26cm.wide. This decorated section appliqued with flattened metal ribbon and couched gilt threads which highlight the aspects of the design woven across the whole panel. Applique with evidence of yellow and white couching threads. Some silver thread loose and other areas lacking. The whole panel is backed with waxed cerise linen. There are cloth loops along one short end. There are small square later cerise square inserts in each corner. The outer selvedge of the damask shows in places, not all edges, a green and red banded edge. There are some water damage marks, which are visible to the main panel. Decorative piece. Versatile size.
