  • each: 54cm. high; 1ft. 9in.
each with a gadrooned ovoid finial surmounted by a knop with four masks on a bell-shaped base, above a squared stem terminating in scrolls, on splayed legs

Condition

Colour less green and slightly darker than photograph. In overall good condition. Very unusual detail to the finials which are cast with masks. Attractive and good pair.

E. Baccheschi-S. Levy, Ferri Battuti Italiani, Milan, 1966, Tav. 164, for a related pair of 16th century fire dogs with a less elaborate finial, described as Veneto, reproduced here in fig.1. The present pair of firedogs are cast with masks on the finials which is a rare feature.
