possibly from The Story of Tobit, woven with a young man standing before an elderly gentleman with stick and a lady with headress, possible Tobias before his blinded father Tobit and mother Anna, and further figures in the background with sticks, in a landscape setting with a thatched cottage, church and woodland in the background, and further figures, one walking with a stick, within a four-sided border woven with alternating allegorical standing figures and grouping of exotic fruit and foliage on a saffron yellow ground, with a further narrow outer border with scrolling ribbon and alternating blue and white stylised floral motifs, with blue selvedge (two vertical sides) and later selvedge

Literature

I. De Meuter, Tapisseries d'Audenarde du XVI au XVIII Siècle, Exhibition catalogue, 1999, pp.148-179, for examples of comparable early Oudenaarde Biblical tapestries, some of which have a similar border.

Condition

Colours not as orange/yellow as in the photograph but more subdued yellow hues. The blue vertical selvedges are original and the horizontal selvedges are later and different colour, as visible in the photograph. Tapestry is dirty and needs cleaning. Previously hanging using metal pole through lining sleeve at the top. Would recommend Velcro attached for future hanging purposes. Some areas of old repair, commensurate with age. Some charming details, including the very unusual sun, moon and stars. Tapestry of a versatile size within a decorative border. It is in stable condition.
