Description

  • 19cm. high, 25cm. wide, 14cm. deep; 7½in., 10in., 5½in.
the hinged dome lid decorated with ferocious birds flanking a cherub surmounted by a chalice with fruit, the front centred by an iron shield shaped lock plate supported by carved cherubs, each side similarly carved with cherubim, the interior of the lid decorated with stars on a blue ground and the box interior painted red, traces of gilding to the exterior

Provenance

The J. H. Fitzhenry Collection in the early 20th century;
Christie Manson & Woods, London, 18th and 24th November 1913, Lot 373 and described as follows, A casket with domed top, carved with cherubs and gryphons in high relief, with traces of painting and gilding - 9¾in. wide - Venetian, early 16th century'

Exhibited

Probably with the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and possibly exhibited there as no 3058 in April 1911 as part of 'The Woodwork Section' and on loan from the Fitzhenry Collection. The frontispage of the 1913 Fitzhenry sale catalogue states, 'The Greater part of the Collection has been on loan at the Victoria and Albert Museum'

Condition

Very decorative. Distressed. Chips and rubbing throughout. Losses. Traces of original gilding. The demi-lune shaped sections to either side of the lid could be replacements - but have great age. The interior would probably have had divisions. Atmospheric.
