Description

  • Set of three panels 38cm. high, 25cm. wide; 1ft. 3in., 10in. The two other panels 34cm. high, 19cm. wide; 1ft. 1¼in., 7½in.
including one example with heads, each with a protruding tongue, tied together at the neck with chains, probably from a chest together with two carved oak Romayne panels, 17th Century, the female portraits facing to the right and with foliate and bird motifs (5)

Condition

Generally good with attractive colour and patina. Some typical wear with old minor chipping and the rims with indications of former framing. Some traces of old worm. The set of three with old securing indents on the rims. The left panel in the catalogue illustration has an old slightly diagonal split and other partial splits near the base as seen in the illustration. This panel with old filled aperture adjacent to the rear of the headband. The reverse of the panel shows fragmenting on this site and a small timber insert. The reverse also shows another old repair on the lower end the other two panels in this set generally tidy to front and reverse. The pair of panels each with an old vertical split and the right hand example in the catalogue illustration with more intense old worm with residual fragmenting. There is an old vertical split with residual old partial loss of nose motif to the portrait and some details of the bird. The lower left corner of this panel with old partial split.
