Description

  • panel: 37.5cm. high, 25cm. wide; 1ft. 2¾in., 9¾in.
depicting a couple face to face above a gadrooned vessel or chalice and twin flower head motifs within a moulded surround, on a later velvet lined mount

Provenance

The Clive Sherwood Collection, Sotheby's Olympia, 22nd May 2002, lot 284.

Condition

Superb colour and patination with attractive subject. Traces of old worm and residual fragmenting to borders. Partial splits in panel and a small section of replaced timber below chalice bowl. Modern velvet mount tidy. Reverse of panel with fragmenting and old worm.

Catalogue Note

The gadrooned vessel or chalice below the couple has stylistic similarities to another carved oak example supporting the arms of 'Blownt' and dated to the first half of the 16th century, see Sculpture and Works of Art, these rooms, 8th July 1998, lot 56. Also see Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p. 424, fig. 424 for Romayne heads with stylistic similarities.
