the painting depicting The Virgin Mary appearing to St. Philip Neri, within a rectangular frame with a blue painted border, the ornate cresting in the form of a canopy with a baluster gadrooned urn at each corner flanking a swan neck pediment above tasselled lambrequins and a seraphim flanked by scrolls, the corners with similar baluster urns, the sides carved with a seraphim above a trail of husks, the shaped apron terminating in scrolled feet on a serpentine rectangular base and flattened bun feet; regilt
Condition
Colour of gilding more golden and attractive than in catalogue photograph. Old very minor marks and chips as visible from photograph and old very minor restorations to breaks in carving. Beautiful detail to carving. There is an iron handle on each side of the back. Blue painting on the border probably retouched. Smalll losses to oil on copper, e.g. centre and left of the border and bottom left corner. The top of the base is painted, not gilded. Oil on copper needs fixing as it slips down leaving a gap. The frame is slightly dirty and would benefit from a light clean according to taste. In overall very good original condition and highly recommended.

Comparative Literature:
E. Colle, Il Mobile Barocco in Italia, Arredi e Decorazioni d'Interni dal 1600 al 1738, Milano, 2000, pp. 136-137, illustrates a Roman frame by the carver Angelo Scoccianti, circa 1717, in the Collegiata di Sant' Urbano, Apiro, which although much more elaborately carved than the offered frame, has a raised canopy on the cresting of similar conception.
The original painting upon which this one is based in is Palazzo Pitti, Florence.
