Literature

For French weavings of landscape tapestries of this subject matter and similar composition, see Chevalier, Tapisseries d'Aubusson et de Felletin, Paris, 1988, pp.128-131. This subject matter was undertaken and individually interpreted by many of the Aubusson workshops in the 18th century, due to the persistent appreciation and vogue for Chinese scenes. Designs intended for the Beauvais workshop were woven in Aubusson, and copies of others were produced. They were thought to have been based on engravings by Aveline, Balechou and Ingam and taken up and used by Oudry and Boucher, the later putting them on the Aubusson looms.

Condition

This tapestry is lined. Velcro attached across the top for hanging purposes. New four-sided outer selvedge. In good overall condition. Stable. Some repairs in areas, particularly to areas of brown weave, see trunks of trees and the ground, commensurate with dye used. Some small patched repairs in areas, for example along the bottom right corner. Attractive tapestry of versatile size.
