An unusual Westphalian incised wrought-iron-mounted oak coffer late 15th century

Description

  • 33cm. high, 70cm. wide, 70cm. deep; 1ft.1in., 2ft. 3½ in., 2ft. 3½ in.
of trapezoid form with a hinged lid cast with leafy scrolls, with a double locking system, the borders with male busts in medieval headress, with an elaborate clasp and iron handle, the front, back and sides applied with iron bands in a latticework design, on a modern base (unillustrated)

Condition

Construction cracks in the hinged lid and generally, commensurate with age. Some minor losses to the oak carcase and also to the metal bands, but these are hardly noticeable as these are generally bordering the top. An unusual and rare piece. In overall good condition. Nice engraved detail to metalwork.
