Catalogue Note

Jonas Zeuner, born in 1727 in Kassel, Germany. He went due to relatively prosperous living standards in the United Provinces, to Amsterdam where he lived until his death in 1814.

The 'Omval" belonged to the municipality of Ouder-Amstel until it became part of the city of Amsterdam in 1921 . The 'Omval' was a spit between the river Amstel and Watergraafsmeer which was drained in the 17th century. Rembrandt used to walk and draw there frequently. A well-known engraving by Rembrandt dating from 1645 depicts the 'Omval', at the foreground a courting couple under an old willow tree.
