Van Cleef & Arpels are well known for creating unique jewels and patenting the best and most innovative of their designs such as the 'Ludo Bracelet', 'Serti Mysterieux' or 'Invisible or Mystery Setting' and the 'Minaudière'.

It began with a wedding between Estelle Arpels and Alfred Van Cleef in 1896.  The company name we still know and refer to today as Van Cleef & Arpels was registered in 1906, the first shop was 22 Place Vendôme, Paris.

The creation of the Minaudière came first in 1930 closely followed by Van Cleef & Arpels legendary Mystery Setting which was patented in 1933.  The Passe-Partout, came about in 1938, this jewel was designed to be transformed from a necklace to a clip or bracelet.

In an advert for the Minaudière by Van Cleef & Arpels it reads 'Submit a new idea "La Minaudière" An exclusive creation, to replace the hand bag'.
