A Flemish gilt-bronze and pewter-mounted tortoiseshell casket Antwerp, 17th century

Description
- 14cm. high, 28.5cm. wide, 20.5cm. deep.
with rectangular domed top centred by a cartouche with putto holding two grapes, the angles with cartouches filled with medallions depicting a female bust portrait, the lower corners with medallions of a female figure holding a mirror, the interior fitted in red silk
Condition
Some smaller losses and cracks to the turtoiseshell veneer (including two larger, ca. 3 and 2cm. long, pieces to the right side, and four smaller pieces; one larger piece to the side left corner (ca. 3cm. long). Two of the turtoiseshell mouldings to the cover a bit loose. Minor wear and soiling to the surface. Some rubbing to the gilding and dents to the pewter medallions. The lock of later date (key available) and in need of fixing. REd silk fitting to the interior of later date.

Catalogue Note
Tortoiseshell was highly prized in the 17th century for its rarity and splendid figuring. A casket such as this would have been given pride of place in a Flemish or German cabinet of curiosities or 'Kunstkammer'.
