Description

  • approximate size 30 ft. by 30 ft
  • 9.2 m. by 9.2 m.
formed by four large panels carved and applied with foliate strapwork, rosettes and bracket molding centered by armorial cartouches, the whole supported by a bracket frieze.  Together with eight oil on canvas frieze panels depicting mythological scenes, probably later associated. Redecorated.

Condition

With losses and age cracks. Some restorations and additions. Entirely overpainted with white paint and gilding. Please contact the European Works of Art department for additional photos and diagrams. Currently disassembled and stored in 12 crates.

Catalogue Note

This lot is available for viewing on two mornings during the exhibition week in a warehouse in Parsippany, New Jersey. This lot is currently unassembled and can only be viewed in open crates. Please contact the European Works of Art department for an appointment to inspect this work. The department also has color images of the pieces in their crates as well as a diagram of the ceiling. The lot will be available for pick up at the Parsippany, New Jersey warehouse after the auction and must be paid for and picked up within 30 days of the sale.  The purchaser will be responsible for all storage charges incurred after the date of the auction.  The lot will not be released to the purchaser until both Sotheby's and the warehouse are paid in full.
