Description

decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e, gold and mother-of-pearl kirigane and kimpun, the cover with a large gold foil sun in the center among repeated stylized clouds through the sides,  the bottom box depicting waves crashing against rocky outcrops, the interior decorated with rimpo (Buddhist wheel) surrounded by seven Tokugawa aoi (hollyhock) mon (family crests) within four brackets of scrolling foliage on a scattered nashi-ji ground, the interior of the boxes lined with colorful kesi textile of clouds and lotus petals pattern, the rims in silver, the top of the elaborate stand decorated with scattered lotus petals on a nashi-ji ground, the rims in kin-ji and Somada inlay shippo tsunagi band, the sides pierced with ten shaped patterns, each revealing colorful paintings of lotus on a geometric design under glass, fitted with brass and shakudo kanagu (metal mounts), fitted with a matching kesi cover decorated with Tokugawa aoi mon in gold thread

Condition

The round metal on the lid is slightly tarnished. One of the four corners of the lid has an old chip. The interior of the cover has a surface crack along the wood line. The stand is missing two of four metal devices for the cords are missing but lacquer condition is good.
