the God of Wisdom seated in lalitasana upon a Buddhist lion standing foursquare and gazing fiercely to his left, the bodhisattva's body and face positioned towards the same direction, with finely combed hair secured together at the ears, falling in loose tresses onto the shoulders, the contemplative face set with an urna, clothed in a loose robe revealing the bejeweled chest, one hand holding a scroll, the hands removable, fitted wood stand (4)
Condition
In good overall condition with minor firing flaws to the underside of the lion. The hands are detacheable. Tiny iron spots to the back of Wenshu.

Catalogue Note
Buddhist temples in China often house icons or images of Wenshu (Sanskrit name: Manjusri) and Pu Xian, the God of Compassion. They flank Guanyin and together are known as San Da Shi, or 'Three Great Beings'. Compare one sold in these rooms, 26th November 1991, lot 309. A larger example, attributed to the 18th / 19th century, was sold at Christie's New York, 19th September 1996, lot 299.
