Description

the rectangular top with molded edge inset with a single panel of dramatically burled huamu, over a recessed waist and scrolling apron with beaded edge, continuing into the cabriole legs terminating in ruyi-scroll and pad feet, wood of a warm reddish brown

Condition

top (possibly of a later date) scratched and somewhat abraded, one minor joint on top with added spline, repaired vertical cracks to one leg, two corners of one apron panel with small repairs, one corner edge with minor repairs, transverse stretchers later, residue from old glue to joints, two filled mortices in underside of skirt

Compare a huanghuali table with similar legs and feet, attributed to the late 16th century to the early 18th century, illustrated in Grace Wu Bruce, Living with Ming-The Lu Ming Shi Collection, 2000, no. 41, pp. 150-151. Compare also two huanghuali kang tables of similar form, the first, sold in these rooms, 17th March 1984, lot 545; the second sold at Christie's London, 17th June 2003, lot 104.
