Catalogue Note
The present table is notable for the extravagance of the brackets and apron, flamboyantly carved with qilong scrollwork. Compare a jichimu table, attributed to the 17th century, with raised flanges and pierced panel supports, but simpler brackets and apron, illustrated in Wang Shixiang and Curtis Evarts, Masterpieces from the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture, Hong Kong, 1995, no. 53, pp. 112-113. For another table with supports pierced and carved with scrolling qilong, circa 1600, see Craig Clunas, Chinese Furniture, London, 1988, nos. 40, 42, p. 53. Compare also a table illustrated in Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (I), The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2002, no. 137, pp. 160-161. A similar table, without pedestal feet, was sold in our London rooms, 26th March 1996, lot 292, and a similar table, with pedestal foot, was sold in our London rooms, 17th November 1999, lot 844.
