depicting three scholars seated under three ancient pines on a plateau above a spring, set in a rocky landscape with dramatic crags in the distance, contrasting with a pavilion under the shade of further pines among rockwork in the foreground, with an inscription which may be translated:



On a lofty plateau we sit together and cleanse our clothes of the dusty world, Swish, swish, the breeze in the pines enters the far-off coppice.  My ambition is among lofty mountains and flowing streams, Who knows what person can truly understand the essence of the qin?  in the xinchou year, the three days before the beginning of the ninth month.  [Painted] in the style of Huangho shanjiao (Wang Meng).  Huang Jun from Yuanho, bearing a seal

Condition

sheet slightly lifting from mount, areas of paler color along sides, faint stains along left side, a few slight abrasions to lower right, repaired vertical tear running from the right of the figures to the top of the mountain, paper and inscription behind mountains may be of a later date
