Catalogue Note

According to Dr. Sewall Oertling, the present work may serve as a metaphor for Daoist thought, where the figures in the stream are seeking knowledge, ultimately represented by the pavilion in the distance, which they will be able to reach only after an arduous journey and sustained commitment (op. cit. p. 17).
