Catalogue Note

The present charger is particularly fine in the quality of its glaze and in its well-potted generous size.  Compare a similar charger of this striking type, also undecorated and relying solely on the beauty and quality of the lustrous glaze, in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Toyko, illustrated in Gen Min no Toji, Tokyo, 1977, no. 157.  See a charger of this type and of slightly larger size, sold at Christie's New York, 20th September 2002, lot 307.

From the early Ming dynasty, the Longquan kilns seem to have worked in close co-operation with the imperial porcelain kilns at Jingdezhen.  Compare a related charger, also undecorated but moulded with ribs on the sides, illustrated in Chinese Ceramics from the Idemitsu Collection, Toyko, 1987, pl. 593.
