Description

the compressed globular body rising from a short spreading foot to a wide flaring mouth, set at the shoulder with a pair of dragon-head handles, the metal patinated to a dark chocolate tone with irregular gold splashes, the base cast with an apocryphal six-character Xuande mark within a recessed rectangle

Provenance

From a private European collection. Acquired in London in the 1960s.

Condition

The censer is in very good overall condition with the exception of two casting repairs 1 and 1.5cm., wide to the foot (contemporary to manufacture), tiny dents and casting imperfections around the body and nicks to the rim. It should be noted that the patina is of a slightly richer darker chocolate-brown tone than the catalogue would suggest, and so emphasising the gold splashes to greater effect.
