Description

A fine group of 11 maps of Asia by Coronelli and Van Keulen. The Van Keulens are from part VI of his Zee-Fakel (Amsterdam, 1753) which was entirely devoted to navigation in Asian waters "where the Dutch held a prominent and envied position; this required a certain secrecy in matters of charts and sailing instructions for the Dutch pilots" [Koeman IV, p. 364].

Engraved map (27 3/8 x 19 1/2 in.; 695 x 495 mm); crease in upper right corner, tipped on to a board, a few minor spots and soil marks. Early state of the left sheet of a two-sheet map, prior to text added in each cartouche but with title and cartographer's name given.
