Catalogue Note

First edition, large paper copy. Evan's influential 1755 map—the first to acknowledge the importance of the Ohio country— was revised for this edition by Pownall to include New England and part of Canada. Pownall printed from Evans's original copperplate with substantial alterations, particularly to the entire map east of the longitude of Philadelphia.  Christopher Gist's journey of 1750–1751 through Ohio, Kentucky, and North Carolina is given its first cartographic representation. Gist's journal, together with memoirs of other frontier explorers, is printed in an appendix.  One of the more important maps of the colonial period.
