Catalogue Note
First edition, the best of atlases published in nineteenth-century America, which contains the first state maps of Florida, Indiana, and Illinois as well as the first map of the Michigan Territory. Wheat cites Stephen H. Long's map of the Arkansas Territory "the most interesting in the atlas." Major Long explored the front ranges of the Rockies and his map traces the route of his expedition. The map also shows his discoveries along the Arkansas and Platte Rivers. His naming of the Great Plains "The Great Desert" delayed settlement in that region for many decades.
