Description

  • 'Au hibou': A rare lamp and shade
  • base signed in cameo 'DAUM NANCY' and with cross of Lorraine
  • 89cm. high by 41.5cm. diameter;
  • 2ft 11in., 1ft 4¼in.
cameo glass in two layers, mottled yellow and dark red ground finely etched, the conical shade with an owl sitting on a pine tree surrounded by pine cones and partially martelé, the bronze mount with owl faces in high relief above a baluster base with pine cones, the martelé foot with pine needles

Condition

A unique lamp of this size. The other lamp known of this model is smaller. Of good overall condition. Minor old marks and scatches overall. The shade with one tiny burst bubble. The neck of the base with one side of the rim damaged, which is concealed by the bronze mount. One or two minor burst bubbles to the surface of the base and to the rim of the base. Not tested nor guaranteed for electricity. A spectacular lamp.

Catalogue Note

Arwas states that only two lamps of this model were executed. The present lot and another which was known to stand for many years on Antonin Daum's desk. That lamp is slightly smaller than the one offered here (70cm. high) and is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy.
