Catalogue Note

This gesso relief has been attributed by Alfredo Bellandi to the workshop of Gregorio di Lorenzo. It follows closely the models in marble, formerly given to "the Master of the Marble Madonnas" by Wilhelm von Bode in the late nineteenth century.  The composition in marble can be found in a number of museums including the Victoria & Albert  in London and the Bargello in Florence.  A terracotta version of the present relief was included in the Serristori sale catalogue of 9 May 1977, lot 869, where it was given to Antonio Rossellino.
