Description

  • two rare champleve enamelled pricket candlesticks
circular base on three feet with knopped stem supporting dish drip pan and pricket

Condition

Both candlesticks are in overall good condition consistent with age. As visible on the catalogue photograph, there are losses to the gilding, as well as to the enamels. There are the inevitable minor dents, marks, scratches and slight deformation consistent with age and use.

Catalogue Note

The closest comparison to the present candlesticks is one in the Musée des Beaux Arts Dijon which is illustrated by Gauthier and dated to the the closing years of the 12th century.  Note the similarly circular convex base rather than the tripod foot which more frequently occurs.
