Catalogue Note

The present large relief would originally have been part of an altar together with other scenes from the Crucifixion.  The relief is distinctive not only for the deep carving and undercutting but also the intricate costumes with slashed sleeves and hose and prominent cod pieces worn by the two central figures.  This fashion was popular in Northern Europe in the first quarter of the sixteenth century.
