Description

  • a painted wood relief with Christ on the road to Calvary
carved in low relief, Christ is shown carrying the cross with two menacing guards before him, to the left  the gates to the city and to the right above, the bound figures of two thieves are led up the hill, a dog symbol of fidelity stands below, now mounted on perspex stand

Condition

Much original polychrome which is flaking in parts. Evidence of old worming, now stable. Arm of upper guard and right guard missing. Chips and scratches consistent with age. Otherwise the condition is good.

Catalogue Note

The relief would originally been mounted on a wing of a small altarpiece, probably originally centred by a Crucifixion. The distinctive face of the central guard is reminiscent of work found in Southern Germany, in particular that of the Munich school.
