Description

  • a silvered and giltwood relief of a bishop saint
  • German, Thuringian, Saalfeld, circa 1500-1505
holding a closed book with his gloved left hand embellished by four rings

Condition

The figure is in overall excellent condition. The polychromy and gilding have been partly refreshed. There is some minor wear to the surface consistent with age. There are minor traces of worming. The lower section of the staff is lost. The mitre has been carved in an original separate section with horizontal joint visible. There is an original separately carved vertical section at the right back. There is some old canvas restoration to the surface at his chest. The ribbons hanging from the mitre have been restored on each side.
