Description

  • A painted limewood relief of the Virgin and Child
the Virgin crowned, the Christ Child in her arms holding an orb with later gilt metal cross, mounted on applied plinth with canted corners

Condition

The polychromy and gilding has been refreshed. Child's left arm and right hand have been reattached as well as His left foot and right hand. There is some minor evidence of worm damage. Otherwise the condition is good.

Catalogue Note

The treatment to the drapery falling in soft nervous folds, the physiognomy of the Virgin and the Christ Child in her arms point to a Tyrol workshop in the last quarter of the fifteenth century. It has been suggested that it originates from the area to the south of Innsbruck.
