Catalogue Note

This relief would have originally formed part of a Venetian sarcophagus, paired with a Virgin of the Annunciation and flanking a relief with the Virgin and Child or alternatively Christ in Majesty.  Compare in particular with the tomb of Doge Andrea Contarini (died 1382) in Santo Stefano, Venice illustrated by Wolters.  The tomb would either have been set against a wall or formed part of a larger monument as in the tomb of Bishop Salomone (died 1322) in Treviso Cathedral. Further comparisons exist with the reliefs in the Toledo Museum of Art, illustrated by Gillerman, as well as with those in Berlin, or examples in the Museo Civico Turin, illustrated by MallĂ©, dated there to the early fifteenth century, each paired with a standing Virgin.
