Description

  • a gilt copper processional cross
the cross with wood carcase applied with gilt copper sheet, trefoil terminals mounted on the front with silver repoussé roundels enclosing  the evangelists, applied with gilt copper corpus on cross, the back finely engraved with the symbols of the Evangelists and scrolling acanthus foliage, the base with iron spike for attachment, now slotting into later turned octagonal ebonised wood socle

Condition

The cross is in overall reasonably good condition consistent with age and use. There are some alterations, such as the applied silver roundels which are probably associated and with small damages, and some later nails. There are minor losses and rubbing to the gilding, especially at the edges of the sheet. The central gilt copper sheet to the reverse is missing. There is a restoration with visible solder to the cross behind Christ's head. There are some (repaired) splits to the later ebonised wood socle.
