Catalogue Note

Molossian hounds, ancestors of present day mastiffs were used in classical times to guard as well as to hunt. They were capable of bringing down large wild beasts and even bulls. The present dogs are close to the classical marble of a Molossian hound now in the Vatican Museum, Rome.
