Catalogue Note

This small-scale gesso model is derived from Antonio Canova's Stuart monument in St Peter's basilica, Rome. The inscription and the portal with its flanking angels have been faithfully copied, but the three Stuart portraits have been excluded and the monument shortened into rather more harmonious proportions than were possible in the proscriptive location of the large-scale monument. Adamo Tadolini was employed by Canova to assist in the execution of the Stuart cenotaph and was the master's most faithful disciple.
