Description
- an ivory diptych leaf with the crucifixion and the Nativity
carved in two registers, on modern metal stand

Condition
There are fine vertical fissures in the ivory which have become discoloured with age. A small section of the border below the reclining calf at the base is missing. There is a small section at the tip of the shepherd's staff missing. Overall with wear consistent with age. The panel is fine and deaply carved.

Catalogue Note
This left hand panel from a two register diptych is characterised by its deep and finely detailed carving. Each scene is carved beneath a trefoil crocketted arch and the swooning figure of the Virgin is supported by three figures rather than two which are more prevalent. On the lower register the reclining Virgin attends to the Christ child in the manger whilst immediately above her a shepherd walks towards a beckoning angel, his two sheep behind him. The right leaf would probably have depicted the Coronation of the Virgin above, with the Adoration of the Magi below.
