Catalogue Note
This terracotta portrait bust of a pope is quite probably Antonio Pignatelli, Innocent XII (1615-1700). Born into an aristocratic Southern Italian family, he became a cardinal in 1681 and was elected Pope in 1691. Innocent was a patron of the arts, particularly architecture, with Carlo Fontana his official architect. Many portraits of this popular Pope were executed both during and after his lifetime.
