Description

  • a bronze door knocker
centred by winged cherub holding flowers and foliage and flanked by two lions, above an armorial cartouche with the arms of de la Tour alternatively known as Thurm of Southern Austria 

Condition

In overall good condition with the inevitable minor dents, marks and scratches to the surface consistent with age. There are some small original firing cracks and imperfections to the bronze. There is some surface corrosion to the wrought iron parts.

Catalogue Note

Stylistically influenced by the work of Nicolo Roccatagliata. Compare with the door knocker formerly in the Figdor Collection illustrated by Planiscig. Note also the flanking lions holding a shell beneath, attributed to a Venetian workshop of circa 1600 and illustrated by Krahn.
