Description

  • four copper sections from a cross revetment
of thin copper sheet decorated on one side with three appliques in repoussé work in the form of a cross and roundels enclosing the demi figures of saints, at the base with the Virgin and Child with epithet inscription now re-mounted on a wooden cross 

Condition

The fragmentary revetment has been put onto a new wood core and sections of what would have been on the back, now placed on the front. There are traces of corrosion and losses in parts.

Catalogue Note

A stylistically similar arm of a copper cross in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, dated to the 10th/11th century and centred by a medallion enclosing an archangel, is illustrated in the Walters Art Gallery exhibition catalogue of 1947.
