Catalogue Note

The story of Hagar is reported in the book of Genesis, chapters 16 and 21. It states that the Egyptian maid Hagar belonged to Sarah, wife of Abraham, who, being barren, gave Hagar to her husband so that he might still have children. Hagar gave birth to a son, Ishmael.
As Sarah herself fourteen years later gave birth to Isaac, Abraham obeyed her wishes and expelled Hagar and Ishmael into the desert. Hagar intended to return to Egypt, but lost her way. Wandering in the desert, God finally rescued them by sending an angel and showing Hagar a well.
Oudenaarde, today situated in the Flemish province of East Flanders, was from the 15th to the 18th century, but especially in the 16th century, a world-known centre of tapestry production.
