Catalogue Note
Also included with this lot is a folder of correspondence surrounding the circumstances of the presentation of this set of Marlborough. This includes an autograph letter signed by Churchill to the recipient, Lieut. F.A. de Vine Hunt, in which he thanks him for the gift of a painting by Helen McKie of the War Room in Admiralty House ("...I am delighted with the posession of this charming picture, which recalls vivid memories of the Admiralty at the beginning of the war..."), 1 page, 10 Downing Street, 16 February 1943. This painting, which went on to hang at Chartwell, was commissioned by Lieutenant Hunt, one of the Naval Staff Officers attached to the War Room, as he records in a typescript also present with the lot. Thus a permanent record could be preserved of the site of so many "historic meetings, discussions and decisions, including the organisation of the evacuation from Dunkirk. Since wartime security precluded any visit to the War Room by the artist herself a picture had to built up of the room entirely by proxy". A letter by the artist Helen McKie to Lieutenant Hunt thanking him for all his assistance is also present. The recipient also records that Churchill inscribed this set of Marlborough on his return from the Casablanca Conference, when he was unwell, explaining the unusual shakiness of the inscription.
Also present in the folder are press-cuttings and material relating to the "Dunkirk to Berlin" map, including a carbon copy typescript of a speech by Lt. Commander Hunt entitled "Mr. Churchill and His Historic Wartime Journeys".
