Catalogue Note
The label reads:
'BROOKLYN CROSSING FERRY:
'.......................................................................W'
Weston made two exposures from the roof of the St. George's Hotel in Brooklyn, one a view toward Manhattan, with the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance (Conger 1660), and the present image taken from a different vantage point, showing the waterfront and Fort Jay. While in New York, Weston was particularly interested in photographing the sprawling views of the city from building rooftops. As in the present photograph, he showed the many, varied aspects of New York's constantly changing landscape. Radically different from their life in Carmel, the pace of New York astonished Weston. As he wrote to his sister, 'It's hard to write from N.Y. Too much going on, no place to hide!' (quoted in Edward Weston's Gifts to His Sister, p. 57).
This image was published in the Leaves of Grass volume. Conger locates no prints of the image in any institutional collections.
