STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition and has been re-varnished. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals infilling to craquelure to the sitters face and scattered retouching overall. FRAME Held in a British Baroque carved oak frame.

Catalogue Note

This portrait depicts a young member of the Wolseley family, of Wolseley House, Staffordshire. Painted by the portrait painter Samuel King who worked in the Midlands between 1693-95, this painting depicts a grandson of Sir Charles Wolseley, 2nd Baronet, (1629/30-1714) and his wife Anne (born c. 1630), youngest daughter of William Fiennes, 1st Viscount Saye and Sele. They had seven sons and ten daughters, the eldest son being Robert Wolseley who died without issue in 1697.
