STRUCTURE
Both canvases have been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
Both paintings appear to be in good condition. There is some minor scattered rubbing to both, as well as signs of very minor scatterd retouching.
ULTRAVIOLET
To him: Examination under ultraviolet light reveals minor retouching along the left and upper edged of the canvas, as well as further scattered minor retouching overall.
To her: Examination under ultraviolet light reveals one small area of minor retouching to the left of the sitter's head as well as some old strengthening to the upper edges of the canvas.
FRAME:
Both held in British Rococo carved and gilded frames.

Catalogue Note
Sir Thomas was the son of Thomas Hesketh of Rufford and his wife Martha, daughter and coheir of James St Amand and Elizabeth daughter and heir of Sir William Juxon of Little Compton, Gloucestershire. He married Harriet daughter and coheir of Ashley Cowper, cousin of the great poet and grandniece of 1st Baron Cowper.
Sir Thomas and Harriet were distantly related to Fleetwood and Frances Hesketh of Rossall, Tulketh and North Meols who sat to Wright of Derby in 1769 (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool).
