Catalogue Note

Louvain is situated twenty kilometres to the east of Brussels in Belgium. In this watercolour the Town Hall, which was built between 1439 and 1463 in the late gothic style, provides a dramatic back drop. Dating from 1833 the present work was made during a period when the artist was living in Paris and sharing a studio with William Callow (1812-1908). It is known that Boys returned to this subject on at least one other occasion for there is a watercolour, dated 1836, that shows the same subject from a slightly different view point (The National Gallery of Scotland).
