Catalogue Note

In the present work the Bristol based artist Francis Danby depicts a small sketching party within the dramatic landscape of the Leigh Woods. This remote area was described by Danby's friend and the amateur artist the Reverend John Eagles as: 'the very best painting ground' (see Francis Greenacre, Francis Danby, 1793-1861, 1988, p. 84). The woods were situated on the south side of the Avon Gorge, near to Clifton and were much frequented by artists and amateurs alike.
