Condition

There are 3 fox marks, one in dark clouds upper left, one 2/3 up near right edge and one near lower left corner. A mark (probably from modern mount) runs vertical 1cm from right hand edge. There is evidence of a fixative, visible because it is uneven lower right foreground to the left of the figures. Overall condition is good.

Catalogue Note

The present drawing can be dated to April 1803. It is connected with a group of drawings, largely depicting shipping subjects that Constable made while staying on the ship Coutts (see Graham Reynolds, the Early Drawings of John Constable, 1996, cat. no. 03.5 to 03.51). Stylistically this drawing can be most favourably compared with Shipping in the Thames or Medway (G. Reynolds, lit. op. cit., 1996, 03.49). We thank Graham Reynolds for his help with cataloguing this work.
